Sono Portside
March 23, 2008
Sono, already a well-known Japanese restaurant located in the Brisbane CBD, opened its second restaurant at Portside early last year. Recently I had the chance to explore the new location and their food.
The new venue is quite expansive, but every possible care has been taken with the design and furnishings of the interior. It speaks class and the traditional Japanese heritage is very clear from the reception through to the dining areas.
Situated on the waterfront, full glass windows allow diners to enjoy the location and view from their tables. The atmosphere is quite relaxed and service at Sono is prompt and helpful.
Sono offers a nice selection of wines and saki, and the food menu is also very expansive. The hardest task all night was probably deciding what to eat. After a bit of deliberation, our table decided to go for a nice mix of platters to sample as much of the Japanese cuisine as possible.
First came a seaweed salad. The item sounds unappealing, but it is surprisingly very enjoyable. The salad was closely followed by sashimi and sushi, accompanied by some excellent wasabi (it’s hard to find good wasabi now) and the staple, soya sauce. The fish was delicious and very fresh, and after re-learning the basics of chopstick coordination, the fairly well-stocked platters were emptied.
The hot dishes arrived a little later, and the table was soon laiden with food. We had ordered a range of Sono’s mixed platters and were presented with many small plates containing four to eight morsels. The food was generally excellent (which you would hope for considering the money spent) but the tempura dish and the beef steak plate were particularly tastey.
If you like Japanese cuisine, then I would strongly suggest an evening featuring in dinner at Sono Portside. You can find more information on their website: www.SonoRestaurant.com.au
